Shirley Hansen

Term: 1992 to 1994

Mrs. Shirley Hansen epitomizes the quote: “The love of gardening is a seed once sown that never dies.” To this day, even though Shirley and her husband, Christian, have moved from LBI to Ohio, Shirley shares that her love of gardening is still in her.

Born and raised in Ohio, Shirley came east for vacations/trips with friends when she met Christian. They married, had two children, and Shirley taught for 35 years while remaining on the east coast until retirement brought them to LBI and Ship Bottom. Although the couple enjoyed life on LBI for 20 years, Shirley’s desire to be closer to her family drew them to return to Ohio where they presently live.

Like many other members, Shirley joined the Garden Club of Long Beach Island through friends. Her love of gardening stems from her mother’s sharing her own love of working with plants and flowers with her daughter. The Garden Club became a natural fit and outlet for her.

Shirley explained that her best memories of the Garden club include those times spent at the Edith Duff Gwen Garden in Barnegat Light. She loved the wonderful times shared in the gardens with the many friends she made. In her own words, she expressed, “It was such a pleasure being with the girls and I made the nicest friends.” She also enjoyed being part of the decorating teams for the annual house tour; but being President was the highlight of her time in the club.

In addition, Shirley moved onto being a member of the Garden Club of New Jersey and being part of district meetings. She is another one of the club members who proves besides being Past President, she is also a lifetime member and honorary member.

After moving to Ohio, Shirley joined the local garden club there. Unfortunately, she was disappointed in its lack of activities and community service. As Shirley says, “It didn’t compare to the Garden Club of LBI” and as members, I am sure we all can agree.
